Did you know that the digestive system also known as the alimentary canal is 9 meters long? Yes from your mouth to your anus in an adult is roughly 9 meters, with the colon accounting for nearly 7.5 meters. It is the most unappreciated system as it works around the clock in order for us to function.
The gut is the foundation of ones wellbeing. Various studies have shown direct links between digestion, mood, health and even our thought process. It’s no joke that the gut also known as the Enteric nervous system (ENS) is referred to as the second brain. It has the ability to work independently of the brain and spinal cord.
Breaking down of food, releasing of enzymes, absorption of nutrients and even expelling of waste products all rely on chemical and mechanical processes within the digestive system. With that being said if ones foundation is not laid well, the tiniest uproar can offset a cascade of reactions.
Constipation, bloating, excessive gas, changes in weight, food intolerance, skin irritation, fatigue, sleep disturbances and even auto-immune conditions are red flags of an unhappy digestive system.
I like to use a basic protocol for patients and customers suffering with digestive complaints before diving further into their ailments.
- All hail probiotics, yes lot of good bacteria on a daily basis is needed to facilitate nutrient absorption and most of all to maintain a balance between good and bad gut flora. My absolute favourite is Metagenics Ultra Flora Balance. One capsule provides 15 billion CFU’s allowing for general well-being and powerful enough to rid digestive disturbances. Another go to is Rawbiotics Gut Correct - A blend of herbal extracts that work with the 14 strains of live fermented bacteria allowing for optimal digestion.
- Many tend to suffer with GERD, abdominal burning, H. pylori and more serious conditions like Ulcerative colitis. Our secret weapon for these conditions is The Other Option Siberian Pine Nut Oil. Pine nuts contain Pinolenic acid which suppresses inflammation and activates antioxidant protective enzymes. This brings about healing of the gut resulting in less digestive upsets. Other benefits such as lowering cholesterol, improving skin and aiding in better metabolism can also be achieved with this product.
- One can never forget about Glutamine. Best results are achieved from a powder format. This amino acid is a source of energy for intestinal and immune cells. Glutamine maintains the barrier between the inside of your intestines with the rest of your body. Patients that suffer with leaky gut reap the benefits of using Metagenics Glutagenics - this licorice, aloe and glutamine blend is one of the best to restore and support the digestive lining.
So before your foundation of health cracks any further, pop in and we will gladly assist in restoring your digestive health. See you soon.
Yours in health,
