Ingredient Facts:

  • Berberine is derived from the stem, root, and bark of a number of plants and herbs, including the Amur cork tree (Phellodendron amurense). Since ancient times, berberine has been used in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine to treat indigestion, diarrhoea, and a variety of illnesses. The hypoglycemic effect of berberine was identified in the 1980s. Since then, extensive study has been done to clarify the pharmacological effects of this alkaloid, including its antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidative capabilities as well as its advantageous effects on lipid metabolism. Numerous human clinical investigations have proven berberine’s clinical efficacy and safety.
  • Berberine controls a variety of molecular targets and pathways to produce its metabolic and cardioprotective actions. It increases insulin sensitivity and glucose utilisation, lowers fat storage, and activates adenosine monophosphate kinase (AMPK), a crucial regulator of energy metabolism in adipocytes and muscle cells. Berberine also has beneficial effects on lipid metabolism by enhancing LDL-cholesterol clearance and promotes endothelial health via the expression of nitric oxide synthase (eNOS).
  • In the gut, has been shown to increase short-chain fatty acid production by gut bacteria as well as increase Akkermansia spp., which controls inflammation and gut barrier integrity. Berberine has been known to have a low bioavailability due to the action of p-glycoprotein in the gut. EGCG extract from green tea has been shown to inhibit p-glycoprotein and thereby increases the absorption of berberine from the intestine.
