Your eyes are windows to your soul
Your eyes are windows to your soul
Flashes of light, seeing spots, blurred or double vision and most frequent headaches, does this sound familiar? If yes then ask yourself, when last did you have your eyes checked?

I personally know how important eye health is as I’ve been wearing glasses from the age of seven, a time when they were not the latest trend. We live in a digital age where all forms of media and information are shown on bright screens. Recent studies show that the average teenager spends seven hours using screens, while adults can spend eleven hours interacting with media.  Yes, the days where you wait till you over fifty to need glasses, have sadly departed.

Luckily with eye health there are only a few specific supplementations that will aid your vision. The main ingredient in eye health supplements is Lutein and Zeaxanthin. These two are popular carotenoids. Carotenoids are a soluble plant pigments, giving rich colour to fruits and vegetables. They are a class of phytonutrients, thus having a powerful anti-oxidant function.

These two amazing carotenoids can be found in the human retina, at the macula lutea. This is responsible for central vision and protection from blue light. A few products that I give my preferences to are Solgar Vision guard plus or Good health Premium Vision. These products assist with Age related macular degeneration (AMD) and cataracts, which is the leading cause of blindness. The above blends are rich in anti-oxidants while containing minerals and vitamins to help combat free radicals whilst slowing down degeneration processes.

While Lutein is giving super powers to your vision, it can also prevent the build-up of plaque in arteries; therefore having an anti- oxidant effect on cholesterol.
Other popular conditions people suffer with are glaucoma (pressure in the eye) and uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye)-  Solgar Bilberry gingko eyebright is great as it offers the necessary carotenoids alongside natural herbs like gingko and eyebright. Eyebright also known as Euphrasia decreases redness, eye irritation and helps control inflammation in cornea cells. The all-rounder Gingko has shown to improve blood flow to the eye while also remaining a powerful anti-oxidant.

The above products, as well as Solgar Beta-Carotene, can even assist diabetic people who are at risk of developing retinopathy. Beta- carotene is converted to Vitamin A, an essential component in accurate and clear vision. This powerful anti-oxidant will also help prevent eye infections.

Since vision and eye health are all about anti-oxidants Solgar Astaxanthin or the Real Thing Anti-X packs a powerful punch. Astaxanthin a red carotenoid pigment found in marine animals and microorganism has the ability to cross the blood-retinal brain barrier allowing it to perform astonishing work in reducing eye strain and improving visual acuity.

Now that I have worn-out your eyes and increased your media time, feel free to pop in and we will gladly help your vision, it’s something we can’t easily get back once left unattended.

Yours in health,
Dr Keshia Niadoo
